Liberty University – an inside look at an educational joke

Posted by Chris on 4 June, 2009

In my constant quest to read every book on the planet and tell you all about it so you can do other things like have a life or hobbies or friends I have finished reading The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner’s Semester at America’s Holiest University.

Author Kevin Roose leaves liberal Brown University for a semester at the uber-conservative Liberty University. Founded by Jerry Falwell, Liberty requires students to follow the “Liberty Way” code of conduct. A few of the rules that students must follow:

  • RAs will inspect the dorm rooms on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays – beds need to be made, trash emptied, things picked up, sinks and mirrors clean.
  • No alcohol, tobacco, R-rated movies or risqué posters
  • Curfew is strictly enforced
  • Men’s hair must be short – can’t touch the collar or cover the ears
  • No earrings, studs or body piercing
  • Collared shirts and pants are required at all times, jeans may not have rips or tears and shorts are never acceptable
  • Interactions with the opposite sex are limited to hand-holding and 3 second maximum hugs

As if the social mores straight out of the 50′s aren’t quite enough to make you run the other way screaming, the curriculum should cause your brain to implode. The author attends the required course Contemporary Issues where the syllabus describes the course thusly:

“This course is designed to aid the student in the development of a biblical worldview. This will involve an introduction to critical thinking, an evaluation of contemporary moral philosophies and an affirmation of absolute truth.”

The professor expands on this by saying that “We’ll be learning about moral philosophies like nihilism, relativisim and utilitarianism, but mostly as opposition research. We’ll discuss where they appear in American society, then learn how to combat them from the Christian perspective.”

The author also attends the History of Life course, a course that teaches evolution from the perspective of

“… why it’s invalid and why it’s foolish, and then showing the proper way and the correct approach to the origin of the species. That approach, of course, is young-earth creationism. Every biology professor at Liberty teaches that God created the universe about six thousand years ago in six literal, twenty-four-hour days, pretty much the way it looks now.”

From his first History of Life exam the author shares a few questions:

  • True or False: Evolution can be proven using the scientific method. (Answer: False)
  • True or False: Science is the only way to truly know truth about the world. (Answer: False)
  • True or False: Noah’s Ark was large enough to carry various kinds of dinosaurs.
    • According the the professor, the answer is “True – since dinosaurs and humans cohabited the earth after the flood, they would have had to find a way to squeeze onto the Ark. He suggested that they could have been teenage dinosaurs, so as to take up less space.”

The author writes an engaging book that draws you in, regardless of your religious views. Even as a dyed in the wool atheist I found the book intriguing and not only because it confirmed some of my views about evangelicals. The book is well written and the author takes an objective look at his situation, I’m not sure I could be nearly as open minded as he was if our roles were reversed. What scares me the most is that this indoctrination is considered a college education, by some.

If you’re interested in a peek at the evangelical college experience, really a day in the life, this is a good read for you.

I dunno, Chris, this looks pretty much like a WTF itself. Well, the idea anyhow. The book looks fascinating.

  2. Fascinating! I admire your varied interests in reading, Chris.

Okay, so, not a single person that I currently know would be eligible for Liberty. Not one. And for that, I’m very thankful. (I did have a friend who was sent home from the even more conservative Bob Jones University….)

What I failed to finish in the above comment was that she was sent home from Bob Jones University for literally, simply, walking across the street as a Freshman without an escort. Women are not permitted to leave campus without an escort as newbies, apparently. She came home.

Indoctrination is what our children get at school.
    It has to stop.

I graduated from Liberty and then went on to get my Masters at UVA. I wish Kevin could have hung out with me because he missed way too much. Your first year is when you have to take all the Bible courses and after that you take more courses related to your major. I did have a night life and liked to have a cold beer with other students but you just could not be as open about it. Now students wear shorts, have longer hair, and its getting closer to what you would expect at any university.

    • Chris said

Jerry ~ mmmmhmmm – beer and shorts woohoo. Now what I expect at University is a bit closer to my own experience, orgies, keggers and more than a few drugs floating around.

This so called college is for muppets. A can get a degree from Lucky Charms and be better off.

Go to a real college if you have good SAT Sccores and if you were not home schooled by retards.

If not become like The Duggars and be the laughing stock of the world.

I am a current student at Liberty University and I think they are great. Thus far, I have spoken to several students that enjoy the environment. It is a breath of fresh air to me. Having a Biblical foundation is a plus. I just received two degrees from University of Phoenix and was impressed by online learning. I am happy to be a part of an environment with good moral values. I live in Colorado and most of the universities here are party schools. I do drink but on occassion. I definitely like the fact that the campus is one that has morals too.

    Just my opinion

I have lived in Lynchburg, VA, home of Liberty University, for 17 years and I can tell you their main goal is increasing enrollment. They will take anybody. Their second goal is to legislate their religion, which is the real purpose of their law school. Their third goal is to make their religion your religion. Although they smile about it and say they are tolerant of other religions, they are not. If you go to Liberty you will get a third rate science education. They are there to propagate their world view. Recently they are mounting an attack to take over the Lynchburg City Council so that they can get favorable rulings for their empire. Someone should be watching the Farwell’s closely because Liberty University is taking on the looks and actions of a cult.

I go to Liberty. You guys are making very broad generalizations. I hate Jerry Falwell and all the crap he did and the way people worship him, and nothing pisses me off more than my evangelism “class” and the fact that it’s required. There is some crap. BUT… it’s a great school. You’re gonna find crazies everywhere- extremes from both sides, and they’re at Liberty just like anyplace else. I hate a lot of the things my school does, but it is academically excellent. You criticize Liberty having biblical classes and rules- IT’S A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL. No one is making you go here. Of COURSE we have rules and guidelines relating to our religion, that’s why people come here. It would be purely hypocritical for a school to call itself “Christian” and not have these rules. And duh we have bible classes, get over it. We want to learn about these things; YOU are the ones being intolerant. You can say I’m “smiling and claiming to be tolerant” all you want- you seem to have either not met anyone who goes here, or only met the crazy people. The crazy ones are the ones outside running around playing all the Jesus games.

give liberty a break and stop being such assholes. If your idea of college is keggers and drugs, you can still get that here, but I feel very, very sorry for you.

All of your arguments are so jam packed with logical fallacies you don’t even make any sense anymore. Stop hating on Liberty, because for the most part, next time your family or you is in need, Liberty kids will be the first ones to step up and help you, despite your beliefs or intolerance. And it’s not because we’re “trying to make our religion your religion” it’s because we’re CHRISTIANS and our job is to love and serve. One of my classes just took a random offering for a family whose house recently burned down and gave them $2000, and when a local family-owned bakery was going under, a big group of us went over and bought everything they had and now they’re still in business. During all that snow, people drove around and hauled people out of ditches.

Don’t be so quick to judge. I’m sure there are people shoving bibles down your throat, and I’m very sorry about that. But honestly, you’re gonna find those people everywhere you go. You don’t need to target Liberty.

Katrina ~ oh that’s right you poor fucking oppressed xtians! Give me a fucking break.

Liberty is not a great school. I am having issues convincing people I am normal while seeking work.
Liberty has a counseling class called “Counseling Women”. They actually teach you that men cannot counsel women and women cannot counsel men. They make you read a book by Nancy De Moss that actually tells you women should be a quiet and gentle spirit. She also makes fun of women who work hard for a living. You are to serve your husband as Sarah called her husband, master. You are not to adorn yourselves and you are to take care of your home while serving your husband. The woman writes a boring story about cleaning her kitchen cabinets instead of the bathroom cabinet her husband wanted her to clean and how selfish she was for doing this. I paid money for this class? The school should lose their funding. This class is close to Islam!
They also require doctorate level students to do their research papers on biblical principles even though they sign up for classes to learn about addictions and PTSD. You attend classes with people who will not counsel others regarding abortion, GID, or homosexuality. You have ministers attending these schools that get upset if you debate them. You will attend school with students who actually believe schizophrenia and DID is demonic possession. I have discussed this with professionals who are astounded this amount of ignorance could take place in an “UNIVERSITY”.
Liberty is full of hypocrites when it comes to money. I guess they do not realize Jesus was not a capitalist. I have seen desperate people audit these classes because they cannot afford to go. Does Liberty work something out with them,,,,,,,,umm no. What a shame.

Katrina, this is why people are upset about Liberty University: it is making a joke of higher education, devaluing everything you work up to as a student of a legitimate university or college. In my opinion, the only way to allow studying religion fair is to integrate it with public schools, where you could have degrees like Theology and Religious Studies. You simply cannot have a Christian school that promotes Christian beliefs giving the same degrees as every other school, for the same reason you cannot have a Scientologist school: they ignore (or change to their own desires) all of the facts. This would be like a lawyer going to trial and saying he got all his evidence from some sunken treasure chest, and the other lawyer got his evidence from years of reasoning, analysis and experiments.

There isn’t anything wrong with a Christian school, but as soon as you put them at the same level as every other school, and allow them to offer degrees that religion has nothing to do with, then I would say it’s gone too far.

Sorry, another comment. I was laughing at the rules. Okay, Liberty has students dumb enough to pay to go to prison…..and be treated like a criminal. WOW Liberty gets to control you, brain wash you, and make you pay for these services.

  14. Katrina said

I said Liberty does dumb things… there are majors that are like, seriously? You’re majoring in “Youth Ministry”? Oookay.

I’m sorry about the morons people let become professors. But, again, no one is making you go here. I’m thinking about transferring because it’s driving me crazy and I totally understand the reasons people think it’s a joke. But people who have these opinions who didn’t even go here, they obviously don’t know what they’re talking about. I’m sorry you had a bad experience. Maybe you should have picked a real major.
