Break out the Easy Bake Oven – It’s Pie Time

Posted by Chris on 27 November, 2008

Today’s my favorite holiday of the year, Thanksgiving. When I was a kid it meant walking up the hill to my grandparent’s house and joining my 8 billion cousins for a traditional turkey dinner. Some years we even had snow and some of my favorite memories involve my late uncle tying inner tubes to his truck and taking us hookey bobbin down the ditch road. If you’ve never been hookey bobbin you haven’t lived – just saying.

As an adult we don’t generally see my family for Thanksgiving (unless they come to Seattle), it’s just too far and involved to travel to Eastern Oregon for the weekend. Usually I’m in the kitchen starting Wednesday working on a feast of epic proportions and we generally have house guests for the holiday, either friends or family. This year is different, we’re headed over to T-bird and Trixie’s place for dinner. For the first time in a long time I’m not responsible for the entire dinner or helping my mom get the whole thing together. It’s a weird feeling.

When we were originally invited to their house I asked Trixie what she wanted me to bring. She suggested pie, my answer was okay – that’s simple. Leave it to me to make it much more involved. Now I’m bringing cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, pecan pie and apple pie. There’s one thing that I’ll be missing desperately during dinner and that’s my mom’s stuffing – to me that’s the best part of the entire meal. Oh well, that just gives me a reason to make a turkey later this winter!

Instead of your typical I’m thankful for this that and the other thing, which I am have no doubt, I thought I’d show you what took up most of my day yesterday.

If you’re going to make pies you’ve got start with the ingredients first.

ingredients

A pie can only be as good as it’s crust, that’s why I make all my own crust – always.

crust

A pecan pie and a pumpkin pie waiting to be baked.

The end result one pecan, pumpkin and apple pie.

“8 billion cousins”?? Are you sure…positive sure…that you weren’t from Alabama….. and that they were really your cousins? The pies look amazing…wish I lived next door so I could sneak over for a slice.

The pies look wonderful! My daughter made pumpkin and pecan pies today. She’s 19, and doesn’t have too much experience with pie crust. Hers turned out a bit too short, but good nevertheless. Much better than my early attempts! The pecan pie was near perfection! Crisp top layer with delicious soft gooey center. The pumpkin pie is beautiful, if a bit dark. She misread the recipe and quadrupled the clove. FYI, clove is a strong spice that isn’t as forgiving as, say, cinnamon if you get a bit heavy handed. WOW! Sinus clearing pumpkin pie! There will be more of that left over than the pecan, for sure.

    Hope your holiday was wonderful!

Wow, Chris, that pecan pie… yummmm! A boy from Texas knows how to appreciate even a picture of a homemade pecan pie. Hope you had a great T Day. We sure did!

Lewis ~ cousins, wives – what’s the diff?
    Peter ~ thanks!
Java ~ I’ve done that with the cloves before, makes an interesting pie to say the least. Crust is tough, but worth learning. Ooey gooey centers in the pecan pie make it all worth it!
NW ~ Pecan is my all time fave, this one was a plain pecan, but I whip up a chocolate bourbon version from time to time as well that gets rave reviews.

Impressive! Wish I’d been there to “sample” them ’cause they look yummy! I, on the other hand, made a Whipped Sweet Potato casserole that I’d found in a magazine…and I HATED it! My mother in-law liked it though…so I guess I earned some points there!
    Happy Turkey Day!

YUM! Your pies look divine! I hope the rest of your Thanksgiving was wonderful too….

  8. Mmm, homemade crust. I need a good and easy recipe. My pumpkin pie last year was awesome, but the pecan pie did not come out right at all. I’ll try this Christmas. :)

Why does the ball of dough have a hole in it? ;)

Libhomo ~ ummm you weren’t supposed to notice that!

As much as I love pecan pie, when its not baked yet, it looks like roaches swimming in milk.

Cb ~ well with that in mind it will be awhile before I eat any more pecan pie!
