13 things I hate about Seattle

Posted by Chris on 4 September, 2008

It’s Thursday which means that it, once again, is time for the fabulous and informative Thursday 13 meme. This week we once again return to my reader selected lists. If you’ve been around long enough you will remember that in previous weeks we have learned what not to put in our butts, ways to spot a gay, ways to know you’re gay before you’re 13, restaurants in Seattle to try and things I love about Seattle. This week we’ll be taking a look at things I hate about Seattle.

Haven’t made a Thursday 13 list, don’t know what the hell it means when someone says Happy TT or you’re just bored and need something to do? Head on over to the Thursday 13 meme hub and join in on the fun. It doesn’t take many qualifications to participate in this meme – be able to count to 13 and have a list of things to share with the world. Link back to the meme hub and watch your traffic soar.

So, without further preamble, the much awaited list of 13 things I hate about Seattle:

  1. the traffic~ we have the worst traffic I’ve ever experienced right here in Seattle. I’ve been in LA, Dallas and Atlanta rush hours – ours, imho, is worse. The only place that has worse traffic than us is midtown Manhattan, but that’s only because they triple park and block the lanes. It can take hours to go just a few miles and a true Seattlite knows how to get from one side of town to another without ever getting on a highway or freeway.
  2. no mass transit yet ~ unbelievably we are still without a true mass transit option in Seattle in 2008. Yes, the bus system is great, but what we need is trains/subways/etc. The light rail will start running from downtown to the airport next year and that’s a start, but we need it in all the neighborhoods and we need it yesterday.
  3. no second airport ~ we’re the last large city in the country to not have a second airport. If we had another airport like most major cities, we could alleviate a lot of the traffic and headaches around Sea-Tac.
  4. no third runway at Sea-Tac ~ the existing airport needs a third runway to more efficiently move air traffic. With a third runway you could still have two runways operational during severe winter storms, as it is that situation limits us to one runway. We’re all painfully aware that problems in one airport will ricochet across the country causing delays and cancellations across the board.
  5. bad roads ~ there are roads in Seattle that rival goat tracks in third world countries. Don’t go to fast down some major streets or you’ll risk losing an axle in a pothole.
  6. stupid bikers ~ I’m all for getting people out of their cars and onto their bikes, but come on people you need to follow the rules of the road. I’m sick and tired ofwatching bicyclists run through red lights, ride the wrong way down the street, ride on the sidewalks, etc.
  7. the inability to get anything done ~ combine many of the issues already listed and you get the grand result that we can’t get anything accomplished in Seattle. We vote and vote and then vote again on the same issue and then have that decision over turned, changed or just flat out ignored. Monorail anyone?
  8. lack of air conditioning ~ when it gets really hot in Seattle during the summer about the only way to ensure that you’ll be in air conditioned comfort is to go to the movies or the mall. Neither of which are terribly appealing to me in most cases. I just wish more restaurants had their a/c blasting during the summer that way I wouldn’t have to sit in my car all day long.
  9. removal of turn signals from all cars sold in Seattle ~ it’s a tragedy that no car in Seattle can include a turn signal. It would make driving so much easier if we just had some way to signal to other drivers what our intentions were.
  10. the inability of drivers to understand gridlock and it’s results ~ take any busy intersection during rush hour and you’ll almost be guaranteed to find drivers blocking the intersection. It seems that they just don’t understand how that makes the already bad traffic situation worse.
  11. tourists at the market ~ geez I understand that it’s historic and all that shit, but come on do you really need to take pictures of the vegetables and fish lined up for sale? It’s my grocery store and I find it just a little bit odd that you want pictures of my groceries before I take them home.
  12. Sea Fair ~ this is less annoying to be than it was when we lived in Seward Park and saw thousands of red neck suburbanites descend on our neighborhood, but I still hate that time of year. The worst is the Blue Angels and their practice runs over the city and having to close one of the bridges over the lake for them to waste gas entertaining the yokels.
  13. everyone assuming I work for Microsoft ~ when I say that I live in Seattle and work for a software company everyone assumes I mean the big one. Nope, there are other software companies in Seattle believe it or not.

This was actually a difficult list to compile, I love Seattle and almost everything about it.

*Note to self…don’t take pictures of the vegetables.*

I grew up in a house with no AC, but now I don’t think I could do without it.

  2. Sue said

Wow! No subway! I am transit reliant so I feel for ya! Here in T.O we have a pretty good system including subways. Happy TT :)

  3. Robin said

As a tourist and a photography buff I do like taking pictures of things in the market I must admit. Hopefully I didn’t come between you and your dinner. I do love Seattle though.

  4. Chris said

Yummy ~ yep no a/c in my house either, but fortunately it’s only a few days a year to suffer through
Sue ~ we’re way behind the times still when it comes to mass transit
Robin ~ I promise not to hurt you if you do :)

  5. libhomo said

Keep agitating for more public transportation. You are doing your part to fight global warming.

  6. Elaine said

no turn signals?? that’s amazing, and dangerous, i mean what about a four way intersection? or did you say only rear turn signals… still, bad.. good thing to hate

  7. I’m chuckling at your A/C comment. I’m here in the bay area in a home without A/C when it’s 100+ outside and 92 inside.

I love Seattle, my husband lived there for a year and we still have family there. That said, the traffic sucks, you are right. I love every other last thing about Seattle. You are a lucky guy!

    XOXO Happy TT!

It is difficult to build a subway under a city that was build (city streets as well as buildings) were built on rubble.

  10. Ugh, the militant bicyclists are here, too, and I hate it. I just hate it. If I hit one of those fuckers with my car, it will change my life, and the idea that they are so nonchalant about it slays me. I did buy a granny bike, and I ride on the sidewalk where the playing field is more even with pedestrian vs. bike rather than vs. car. Why not make wider sidewalks instead of having bike lanes on the roads? Sorry. Nerve, touched a wee bit. ;)

I do *love* having light rail in Portland. It really is all that awesome and then some, even when people bring bikes on it…

  11. Ann Bruce said

Wait…what do you mean there’s another software company besides Microsoft?!?

  12. Lewis said

my gosh, much of it sounds like portland…. and i totally concur with you on the air conditioning…which is why i have it!

  13. I love no. 11! Tourists stare and snap pictures at Uwajimaya too. I find it really annoying and rude.

Having spent the last three years in Southern California, I can tell you that #1, #2, #5, #9 and #10 can’t even compare to how it is down there. So here, I suddenly feel like traffic is nothing, the roads are amazing, everybody used their turn signals and nobody runs reds or blocks intersections. And LA doesn’t have a decent Subway system either. God, that city really sucks.

  15. Brandon said

Oh, and even though I’m a local, I still like going to Pike Place and snapping pictures. It’s just one of the best places in the entire city to do so.

  16. Chris said

    Libhomo ~ I try
Elaine ~ yep if you move here and have turn signals it’s the law you have to rip them out
Pussreboots ~ I’d be dying and headed to the movie theater if I was there
Poppingbubbles ~ what I love about Seattle far surpasses what I hate about Seattle for sure
Mike ~ good point – though the view might be interesting under Pioneer Square
Maggie ~ well something needs to change that’s for sure!
Ann Bruce ~ hard to believe, but yes, it’s true
Lewis ~ they are much the same
On Being Queer ~ haven’t seen that at Uwajimaya, but that would really weird me out
Brandon ~ I’ve spent a lot of time in LA on business and yes that city really really sucks
Brandon ~ see I knew you weren’t perfect, I’ve been trying to convince people of that!

  17. I hate people on bikes. They are ignorant. Go ahead, make your point that you belong on the road just as much as I do. Whatever. What kind of moron does 20mph in the middle of the lane while the setting sun is blinding the driver of the car? Our morons, that’s who! This world is full of nuts on bikes trying to convince me they can run with the cars…I say, is that crushed skull making your point?

Traffic: I’m originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and I used to work in “the City” and commute to the East Bay where we lived. A mere 12 mile commute. Having to cross the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge at rush hour was a nightmare that usually resulted a 60 to 90 minute drive to travel 12 miles to El Cerrito. Due to geography and opposition to road construction, Bay Area traffic is the worst I have experienced anywhere, including Southern California.

Sea Tac: Now, correct me if I’m wrong but I thought Sea-Tac was in the process of building a third runway? I recall reading an article about the airport acquiring land to build it to accommodate the new mega-Airbus A380? Did the project fall through?

On a personal note, I so wish housing prices would go down in Seattle because we would move there in a flash. But, I don’t think that will ever happen, so we visit.

  19. Chris said

Gayle ~ I appreciate the idea of using bikes to get around, but they need to follow the rules of the road. A crushed skull proves a point, but to whom I’m not so sure.
Christopher ~ I haven’t driven much in the Bay Area usually we don’t get a car when we’re down there. Sea-Tac is in the process of the third runway, but it’s being held up I think. I haven’t heard that they got the environmental impact issues resolved or the noise issues, but I’ve been known to be wrong… :)

Wow, that’s crazy about the air conditioning. I’ve never heard of such a thing. I guess every city is different. Great idea for your TT and thanks for stopping by my mine.

  21. Nicholas said

People on bikes are generally as arrogant about the rules of the road everywhere, not just in Seattle.

This is a hard post to read, because I feel downright fortunate to have come here to live.

But numbers 1-3 are spot on, unfortunately. Moving here from DC, and initially taking a job that required me to drive from Whidbey Island to Microsoft, I was disheartened and stunned at the massive traffic snarls on 405. Then we moved to Phinney Ridge and I learned the joys of 520. And no amount of time spent on the Capitol Beltway can compare.

But nowadays I reverse commute out to Snoho, so I don’t give a damn. (Except I still long for the days of subway commuting, which I did for 10 years.)

  23. Chris said

Michelle ~ no need for the a/c most of the year up here so nobody has it
Nicholas ~ yes, that’s sadly true
NW ~ oh yes, I’m happy to be here and it was a hard list to create. I’ll take all these problems to be here any day…

  24. Everyone I know hates sea fair, and yet it’s crowded every year!

  25. Chris said

Steve ~ it’s crowded, but only with people coming in from the sticks
