Jinkies – one story, two sides who knew…

Posted by Chris on 30 July, 2008

Yesterday I posted about McCain and the horrific accident that occurred on board the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal {CV-59} on July 29, 1967. I reposted in full from another site without researching the incident. I generally don’t repost something someone else wrote and if I do I usually spend some time researching the information to make sure it’s valid. This time however I didn’t.

My post generated a few comments, one being from my blog buddy NW:

Uh, hmmm, err, so why does Wikipedia’s article on the Forrestal say an errant missile caused the incident? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Forrestal_%28CVA-59%29) No mention of McCain. Geez, I would hate to think Democratic operatives would stoop so low as to act like Republican Truth Boaters. Where’s the proof linking McCain to this? And if there is none, how is this different from the crap that claims Barack is a Muslim with secret ties to bin Laden? (Huge Obama fan here — would never vote for McCain even if PeeWee was his opponent — for the record.)

My response to NW’s comment was:

NW ~ thanks for actually looking into this instead of just repeating it like I did. I would say two things 1. the nature of Wikipedia means that anyone can change the entry so I always take what it says with a grain of salt and 2. his father and grandfather being Admirals might have played into the official report. In my opinion it’s still possibly the truth and I say that mainly because I like to think that the Dems wouldn’t stoop as low as the Republican swift boaters did in the last election. Maybe I’m being idealistic…

With this post I am making no claims whatsoever to the validity (or lack thereof) of the original post or the information that is posted over at Mike Says (who actually did take the time to do some research). I stand by my comment to NW, I’m not a huge believer in the accuracy of Wikipedia contents and I can see that McCain’s lineage may have provided for some cover up. Perhaps I am being overly idealistic or I have my head in the clouds, but I’d really like to believe that “we” wouldn’t use the same shitty tactics “they” have used on us over and over. Of course we probably would.  Read both sides and make up your own mind please.

Regardless, I just want to come out as having an open mind and having the ability to see beyond my political prejudices… at least I hope!

Thanks. That’s all I can ask.

I remain highly skeptical, and yet, I actually worked for a member of Congress for a while in the 90s in DC. And honey, I’ve seen the lies, the coverups, and the bullshit up close, and on that basis alone, this story just may be true indeed. The most important things we need to know about the people who govern us typically are well-kept secrets, even in the Internet age. This I believe.

So overall, I’m glad you posted this info, and really like your approach to why you did it. But my biggest nightmare would be to learn that some Democrats planted a lie like this. Democrats stooping to the level of your average GOP campaign operative would be unforgivable, IMHO.

Now, back to telling us more about the S&^#@ Fer Brains boss of yours:)
