Those damn San Francisco values!

It seems that those freaks in San Francisco have influenced the California State Supreme Court justices. Four of the seven judges agreed with plaintiffs that a 2000 law banning same-sex marriage was discriminatory.
“Limiting the designation of marriage to a union ‘between a man and a woman’ is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute,” California Chief Justice Ron George said in the written opinion.
Challenges are expected, but anticipation is high that this might be the first in a wave of changes nationwide. Primarily significant is that California law allows non-residents to be married. As if San Francisco needed another draw for the queer tourism dollar.

In response to the ruling, the wingnuts are already crying “activist judges”. What they fail to realize is that the judges are doing their jobs, they interpret laws to determine their constitutionality. It’s called checks and balances and it’s one of the central tenets of our government. Wonder what they would be calling the justices if the law had been upheld?
“Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has twice vetoed legislation that would’ve granted marriage rights to same-sex couples, said in a news release that he respected the court’s decision and “will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling.”
At least one republican in California understands how the system works.

“This decision is the beginning of the end of the Republic; it renders every marriage in the country worthless.”
I heard that with my very own gay ears this afternoon on CNN.
(As if even half of hetero marriages are worth something anyway!)
