Voting against your own self interest?

I’ve been a Clinton supporter from the very beginning; I’ve made no secret of that. I’ve also qualified my support of HRC by saying that I would, without hesitation, vote for the Democratic candidate regardless of whom that was. I can see the writing on the wall, even if others can’t. I know that Obama is the candidate and we need to rally behind him in preparation for the long fight to the inauguration. I don’t think that Obama is the stronger of the two candidates, but he does have the numbers so that’s that. Presented with an Obama ticket versus a McCain ticket in November my choice is crystal clear.
Apparently there are those who disagree with my point of view. In fact it seems that there are many Clinton supporters who intend to vote for McCain in November. This seems to be an example of the old adage “cut your nose off to spite your face”. How does it make sense to vote for the opposite party when your candidate didn’t make it onto the ballot? Childish, petulant and bitter are a few words that come to mind.
On the basic issues such as Iraq, Iran, Health care, Taxes, Welfare, Social Security, etc etc etc Obama and McCain are diametrically opposed. However, in the grand scheme of things, these issues don’t matter. A presidency is only four years with the potential for eight years. The real problem, and what we as liberals need to be most concerned about, is the Supreme Court. Those appointments are for life and the next President will in all likelihood be changing the composition of the court. The effects of the next justice appointments will be felt for a generation, if not longer. Are we ready to cede the court to the religious whack jobs that want to do away with a woman’s right to choose? How about the right of an individual to make birth control choices? What about those who don’t understand the critical importance, on both sides, of the separation of church and state, should they be in control of the court? We’ve seen that Congress has been unable or unwilling to control the current president since the liberals took over in 2006. Do we really trust that they would have any greater control over McCain if he was elected?
Wake up Clinton supporters! You are doing yourselves, your party and your country a disservice if you choose to vote for McCain in November. Regardless of Obama’s strengths and weaknesses, regardless of his experience, regardless of whatever issues you or I may have with him we MUST rally behind the party. While this country can potentially survive another four years of the current administration (you’re fooling yourself if you think McCain will be any different) the ramifications will be felt for generations. The current administration has shown us just how fragile the Constitution can be; let’s not test it further with another four years. The damages done during this administration will require years to repair, let’s begin this fall by electing the democratic candidate, regardless of whom that is.

Glad you are coming around
Seriously, though, I agree that while it might feel good short term to do the cut off your nose to spite your face thing, longer term is so much more important to consider. In this case and in plenty of others, too.

I’m so with you on this. I have been a passionate Obama supporter from the very beginning. I really do think he’s the stronger candidate, for lots of reasons – strong character, strong vision, the ability to put together the strongest team, etc.
But, I think that Hillary would make a fine president too. They’re really so close to each other on the issues, that it definitely comes down to personality, authenticity and ability to connect with people.
I can’t imagine how someone could support either Obama or Clinton one day, and their stances on issues and because of a childish impulse, decide to support John “I don’t really understand economics” McCain and his coming War on Iran.

i agree 100%. I voted for Hillary in the New York primary. But knew from the beginning that I would vote for my pet rock before I’d vote for McCain. And I really don’t think Obama is a bad choice, I just preferred Hillary.

Chris — Don’t want to sound like a parrot, but you expressed my precise sentiments. Follow the logic: Hillary does not get on the ballot, so you vote for the person who holds 180-degree opposite views from her on, oh, name your issue: reproductive choice, equal rights, economic policy, Supreme Court nominee qualifications, etc. Sure, HRC’s stance on Iraq is not exactly what most of us would prefer, but G.I. Johnny will gladly fund 100 years of occupation, so what kinda choice is that?
Hillary hands down owns the bona fides to the gay vote. Her support for gay rights, and her working relationship with the HRC among others, is peerless. Until the New Hampshire primary, Obama had on staff a dude who advocated for the “gays can change” movement. He gave his first interview during the campaign with a gay publication just one month ago.
But to discard this baby with the bathwater for a washed-up sop like John McCain. Yikes!

Cyrus ~ exactly – it’s personality and so on. Either way this boy is blue come November!
Maddog ~ your pet rock would make a better president than McCain. I’m with you, Obama’s not a bad choice, he’s just not my first choice.
NW ~ parrot away! The gay issue is one of the bigger problems I’ve had with Obama all along, but then I loved Bill Clinton and he didn’t always do what I wanted either… We’ll have more problems than the missing baby if McCain gets his grubby hands on the Supreme Court. We’re going to be looking at religious extremism in this country if that’s the case.

Alec Baldwin had a great post on the Huffington Post about the same thing–and he made a great point–Obama could even, potentially, name Hillary to the Supreme Court.
That would be awesome.

My brother-in-law is one of those supporters who just a few days ago told me he’d sooner vote for McCain than Obama. Fuckwad.
