To hell with it…

Posted by Chris on 29 November, 2007

sm1582pissed-off-posters.jpgSo maybe it’s the migraine that I’ve now had for three days or maybe I’m just a bitch, but I’m going to post about what’s been pissing me off for the last couple of weeks.

Last year my group of friends did something new and different for xmas. Instead of me cooking up a huge ass xmas feast like I usually do, we did a potluck. Instead of each of us buying everyone gifts we did a gift exchange complete with stealing, crying and wailing. We also did a white elephant exchange which resulted in some of the fugliest things you’ve ever seen. Overall it was a great success, especially considering that I didn’t have to make the entire meal and Bryan and I didn’t have to host a holiday event for the first time in many many years.

Fast forward to this year. The consensus was that since last year was such a freaking success we should do it again this year. During some moment of weakness I agreed to host the party this year. Fine, not a big deal – make a ham, some rolls and a dessert, put the tree up early and clean house. We also decided to draw names this year instead of doing the exchange involving stealing, etc. Then we started discussing the list of who to invite, here’s where things get sticky. I wanted to invite the core group of friends (S&T, S&A, D) and call it good. D wanted us to invite K who I like and now that she’s moved back to town it would be great to see more of her, so that was fine. A wanted to invite C&B a couple that she’s very good friends with (she went to high school with C) who are at best casual friends of Bryan and mine. I can barely even remember what B’s name is most of the time. But fine, whatever the more the merrier, blah blah blah.

A date was chosen, plans were made, yada yada yada. I emailed C and asked her if she and B wanted to be included in the drawing of names for the party. I mentioned the dollar limit of the exchange so that they could make an informed choice. I didn’t hear anything back from her. (pet peeve #47879 – people who don’t read/reply to their email) I ran into her online in EverQuest II and flat out asked her if they wanted to have their names drawn – she said yes. Again the price point was mentioned.

Names were drawn and invitations were sent. I’d be shocked if C&B even had time to read the damn invitation before they fired off an email complaining about the dollar limit of the gift and asking if they could be considered as one name instead of two. So after being pissy about it to Bryan and bitching to S about it I re-drew the names and fixed the problem.

Fast forward to yesterday, I receive an email from C&B saying that they won’t be there at all. WTF! I suppose I should just be glad that they’re not coming and they’re now on my do not invite list if I’m hosting. If someone else wants them invited they’ll need to host the event.

Blech – okay now I feel a bit better – grin. I’m going to go hide in the bedroom for the next week or so to avoid the potential fall out from this post.

  1. Chris, I feel your pain. Those kinds of things are exactly why I stopped volunteering to coordinate big friends/family events. They usually end up being fun, but sometimes it’s just not worth all the shit leading up to it. I hope things turn out alright for you–sounds like there’d be a big hole in the holiday season if you stopped getting together with this group. Good luck! –Jen

Thanks Jen, it felt so much better to just get it off my chest. The whole thing is stupid in the grand scheme of things, but sometimes… :)
