13 Random Facts About Me
Posted by Chris on 19 July, 2007
Is it Thursday already? I’m not sure where the week went, but I’m glad that it’s almost over. Now on to this installment of Thursday 13, my 9th!
1. I have one brother (3 yrs younger) and one sister (9 yrs younger & yes, she was planned).
2. I grew up in the same town that my Mother did and there were teachers of mine throughout the years that had been her teachers as well.
3. My Father was a city policeman in this small town. In other words I got away with nothing! They usually knew what I had been doing before I got home. My least favorite phrase of my Dad’s was “I saw you, Mike, Tom & Jeff cruise by on the strip 25 times last night.”
4. My parents have been married for 40 years. They only knew each other for about 9 months when they got married. Obviously they’ve done something right.
5. I’ve voted in every election since I turned 18. I even vote for School Board and those types of elections.
6. I wanted to be a Veterinarian when I was in high school, my college degree is in Psychology and I teach computer classes. Not sure how I got from one to the next but I did.
7. I found out in January that I’m diabetic. I’m trying to control it through diet and exercise, but it’s hard. I’m going to have some tests run next month and hopefully we’ll see that my glucose levels are down, I don’t want to have to start taking medication for this.
8. I have extremely high cholesterol when I’m not controlling it with medication. I was 17 the first time I had it tested and it was high then. I went on a no cholesterol diet and the total amount almost doubled for some weird reason. I’m just glad that there is a medication I can take for it now because my Dr. said I’d have dropped dead from a heart attack before now if I didn’t take care of it.
9. As part of my get healthy, beat diabetes plan I’m seeing a Nutritionist. She has me drinking about 3 liters of water everyday. Apparently I have a micro-bladder, so I’m having to pee about every 30 minutes lately.
10. It took me 6 years to get my BS in Psychology. It took that long for two reasons. First I went to the Community College in the town I grew up in for free for two years. Then I went to University where I changed my major about 10 times. Those two combined set me back two years. Oh and the fact that I wanted to be a professional student might have played into that as well.
11. Bryan and I hated each other when we first met. We were both interested in the same guy and saw each other as rivals. Somehow we ended up going out a few times and started dating. None of our friends at the time thought we would last more than a few months. Surprisingly it’s now been 14 1/2 years that we’ve been together. I guess we’re doing something right as well, or we’re just too stubborn/lazy to give up.
12. I dated a guy in college who had the nickname “Blackjack” because he ended all of his relationships after 21 days.
13. My main hobbies are photography, cooking and genealogy research. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like I get to spend any significant amount of time enjoying any of them except cooking.

Nice to learn some facts about you.
My human mom wanted to be a veterinarian until she worked one summer at a veterinary hospital, and discovered she couldn’t stand seeing animals being put to sleep.

It’s nice to meet you. Thanks for commenting on my butterfly TT.

Good luck with the diabetes, and the minute bladder
How do you sit through long films at the cinema? Happy T13

I can’t drink a thing during long movies or else I have to get up which I hate doing. I just grit my teeth towards the end of the movie and hold out.

I am sorry about your diabetes—that’s rough. But it definitely can be controlled by diet and exercise (a family member of mine has had it). A 14 1/2 year relationship is definitely something to celebrate..and a good “how we met” story; it would make a good screenplay…!

Nice to “meet” you!
I, too, have voted in every election since I turned 18 — every time the polls are open I am there. There was even a “special” election on a Saturday. Those for it thought that would get enough turn out for the “yes” vote for it to pass. It back fired! Ha ha!

I’m battling the lure of professional studentship right now…and my doctor also has me drinking three litres of water a day (although because of diabetes, just to combat the headaches and dizziness that are apparently caused by my chronic dehydration.) Good luck with controlling the diabetes! My stepmom is trying to do the same thing, so I’ve seen how challenging it can sometimes be.
(My TT this week is Thirteen Things in Poodlerat’s Room.)

I tried being a professional student but got bored with it finally. LOL!
I wish you luck with controlling your health issues. Stick with it!

You can find some great info on diabetes at Mercola.com. Cinamon is a great sugar regulator!
My dh went on the Atkins diet, where everyone says you will have high cholesterol from all the fatty meats, but he did it under a doctors watch and they were amazed to watch his cholesterol go DOWN, significantly!
I could keep going, but I’m actually not a health nut like it sounds, lol. Mercola.com is awesome, though!

Thanks I’ll check out that website. My nutritionist has me increasing my cinnamon, which is easier said than done it seems.

First let me say thanks for stopping by
I’m from a small town in VA so I understand completely. My hubby and I weren’t too fond of each other when we first met either.

My father wasn’t the dhief of police, but my godfather was. I also grew up in the same small town that my parents and their parents grew up in. It was rather unfortunate in High school, especially when i learned my Dean of Boys had hung out with my uncles. (they KNEW I was going to be trouble!)

#12 sounds like a character from a bad Hollywood sitcom (as opposed to a bad British sitcom)

Thanks for your visit & comments @ It’s A Blog Eat Blog World and The Mo Show
I love your TT list — I’ve been with my partner for 14 and a half years, too - and I vote in all the elections.
I drink a lot of water, too, and I usually have to race to the restroom at the end of the movie in the theatre.
And I love the anecdote about “Blackjack” - haven’t we all known one of these users?
Thanks for sharing. Hope to see you back at The Mo Show soon!

I laughed at number twelve! That’s pretty funny. And 14 1/2 years! Wow!

I really should get my cholestrol checked. It’s something I’ve assumed is fine, but I guess I really don’t know until I know (if you follow). Great list!

Interesting list! My husband has had outrageously high cholesterol all his life - so did his father. His doctors’ about have a heart attack every time they check it. It seems to be a hereditary thing that doesn’t seem to be negatively affecting his health. Just a thought

Sounds like it is for the best that you aren’t still with blackjack — altho I am not sure that would be possible if his name still means something. Happy TT! Thanks for visiting my TT!

I hope this will be encouraging: my dad became diabetic, and since the medicine for it would have prevented him from doing his job and forced him to retire early, he decided to manage it with diet and exercise. And it worked!

Thanks Dewey, it’s good to hear things like that. It can be pretty frustrating but I try to stay positive most of the time.
