My favorite book series
Posted by Chris on 12 July, 2007
For my 8th Thursday 13 I’m listing some of my favorite book series. I enjoy following a good series through it’s installments. Some series are wrapped up in three books and others take 31 (and counting) books to tell the tale the author wishes to relate. One interesting thing I notice as I look over this list is that they are all Sci-Fi or Fantasy books (my secret is out!). So without further ado, in no particular order, here are my 13 favorite series.
1. Harry Potter – J.K. Rowling
Have you been living under a rock or on a desert island? No need for explanation here.
2. Xanth - Piers Anthony
31 and counting installments in this “trilogy”. I was given “A Spell for Chameleon” as a gift when I was 15 and I’ve been hooked since. Xanth is a magic world where Centaurs and Zombies abound, the residents perform magic routinely and from time to time they visit the very strange and boring land of Mundania.
3. Incarnations of Immortality – Piers Anthony
7 books follow the 5 Incarnations (Death, Time, War, Fate & Nature) and their interactions with good, evil and the world at large.
4. Dragonriders of Pern – Anne McCaffrey
A remote planet where Dragons are revered and necessary for the survival of humans.
5. Sword of Truth – Terry Goodkind
The common man turns savior, gets the girl, loses the girl, gets the girl, loses the girl… Another fantasy series set in a land torn apart by war, but alive with magical powers.
6. Wheel of Time – Robert Jordon
Once again the reluctant common man turns savior. Many, many plot threads and more characters than I can count. Again a land torn apart by greed and evil with magical powers available for our heroes and villains.
7. Dragon Prince – Melanie Rawn
An arranged marriage, a sudden ascent to the throne and the descent of a country into war. A fantasy world worth visiting.
8. Dune - Frank Herbert
Life on a planet with precious little water, giant worms, mysterious & important spice and the ever present underlying theme of war.
9. Inheritance - Christopher Paolini
Described by some as formulaic and simple, also compared (unfairly imho) to Lord of the Rings. I still enjoyed these books, but then I’m a sucker for dragons. Also keep in mind he was 17 when he wrote the first book… in other words WOW!
10. Legends of Camber of Culdi – Katherine Kurtz
A world where magic is performed only by those of a specific race. A world where discrimination and persecution of this race become common. A slow boiling civil war between the magical and non-magical races carries us through this series.
11. Lord of the Rings – JRR Tolkien
Okay, how’s that desert island treating you and how are you accessing the internet and still know nothing of this series?
12. Memory, Sorrow and Thorn – Tad Williams
A world erupting into war, another reluctant and this time somewhat bumbling hero, a magician’s apprentice tries to save his world from evil.
13. Otherland - Tad Williams
A world where virtual reality is common place and people have jacks in their heads to connect to the Net directly. A “cyber-punk” adventure with many intriguing characters. Virtual reality gone bad, children in comas and heros trapped in virtual reality simulations.

I’ve only read HP, LoTR and Dune (the latter just a couple of days ago), but pretty much all the rest are ones I’ve heard of and plan to read…someday. I’m really looking forward to reading the Dune sequels—and of course to HP #7 (9 days!)
(My Thursday Thirteen is Thirteen Books Poodlerat Bought.)

Now this is a great list — some I have yet to explore.

Hmmm, a couple here I haven’t heard of!
I’m such a TT slacker. I’ve skipped the last two weeks.

Dune is probably my all time favourite series of books. The level of detail in the world building is phenomenal and the breadth from ecology to history to religion to culture to technology all intertwined to produce a fabulous tapestry.

Uh-oh, there are several on this list that I are on mine: 1, 2, 5 (although Goodkind can be very redundant), 8, 11. I’m surprised you don’t have any Terry Brooks on there. And I completely agree with Mark. Dune is outstandingly rich although for me the series goes in a reverse bell curve with books 1 & 6 being the best for me.

I agree with the ones I know. I’ll check out the rest, nice tips!
Thanks for visiting my essentials TT!

Ahhh…lovely list of books! My hubby gave me A Spell for Chameleon as a gift after we went on our first date. That and the LOTR Trilogy. What a guy! Gotta love him for that. And I did.
Have you read any Steven Brust? I used to be very into his books until he partnered with someone and then they just went downhill. But they were awesome before that.
Thanks for the visit! Happy TT!

I must admit that I never really got into HP, didn’t capture my mind. NOthing against it, just not for me. Lord of the Rings is more my style.

I’ve never read any of these…
I have watched all the LOTR movies. I know, that doesn’t count! I think I need to broaden my reading horizons.

HP again! I’m a HP lover but another mention of HP will make me breakdown and cry at my lack of finance to pursue an HP obsession. Please be kind to me. I liked Wheel of Time (bloody thick though) and I’m going to start on Dune soon. However, I’m one of those minority who detest LOTR so much. When I was a tot, I read the Hobbit and I loved it. I thought I’d love the sequel to it too so I bugged my dad to buy me those LOTR 3-in-1 sort of books. I didn’t like it and deem it unreadable together with Aenid and Illiad (my, shows you how ’sophisticated’ I am huh for dissing brainy classics like that).
Your comment on my TT was marked as spam by my sabotaging, selfish and patronizing wordpress. There are times when Akismet annoys me. Sigh…
Happy TT!

Ah, a book list! Love those.
As if I needed any more books to add to my Mt. TBR. LOL
I agree with some of them (HP, LOTR, Pern – up to a point, Xanth and Otherland), others I couldn’t get into (Wheel of Time being one example), the rest I have never read so far.
But you have to be kidding about this Christopher Paolini kid. He might have been only 15 when the first book came out, but I think his editor (if he had one, which frankly, I doubt) doesn’t have this excuse. Those books are just unbearably crappily written. Not only are they a blatant rip-off from things like LOTR, Pern and even Star Wars, but they are just so so … I don’t even find a word strong enough to express my feelings. There’s not one original thought in there and the storyline itself is foreseeable from the getgo. And don’t even get me started on that sulky, stupid, annoying main character. How crap like that can get published will always be a mystery to me…
Sorry for ranting. I just can’t help myself sometimes. ;o)

Great list! I also enjoy the Harry Potter, LOTR and the Sword of Truth series. I couldn’t get into Dune, can’t remember why, and haven’t tried any of the others on your list yet but I probably will. Have you read the Sword of Shannara (Terry Brooks), Thomas Covenant (Stephen R. Donaldson) or Song of Ice & Fire (George R.R. Martin) series? No dragons though…

I haven’t read the Outlander series, but after looking it up on Amazon it’s now on my TBR list. Thanks for the recommendation!

I haven’t read Steven Brust either, I’ll have to pick one of his up as well.
Chris said
No, I’m not kidding about the Paollini books, I actually enjoyed them. They’re light and quick reads. Are they up to the quality of LOTR or Pern – no. LOL to each their own.

Never could get into the Terry Brooks series for some reason, not sure why. I tried it in college and always thought I’d go back and give it another try, but just haven’t yet. I’ll have to check out the Donaldson & Martin series as well. Thanks for the recommendations.
